Curated by Susanna Moreira and captured through the lens of architectural photographer Fran Parente, the project represents a profound exercise in architectural synthesis. Rather than pursuing excess or decorative grandeur, Casa Bahia is rooted in a search for essentiality, where form, materiality, and emotional sensitivity achieve a delicate and harmonious balance, directly reflecting the architect’s personal and professional design philosophy.

Designed from the ground up to serve as a sanctuary from the fast-paced demands of professional life, Casa Bahia translates the quintessential notion of a summer home into a spatial experience defined by calm, clarity, and connection to its surroundings. Martinez approached the design as an introspective journey, stripping away the superfluous to arrive at a pure architectural language. The resulting structure showcases how thoughtful spatial planning and restrained detailing can create an environment that feels both sophisticated and entirely unpretentious, aligning seamlessly with the idyllic expectations of a coastal or warm-weather retreat.

At the heart of Casa Bahia’s architectural identity is a rigorous exploration of materiality. The project employs a curated palette of tactile, authentic elements that respond gracefully to the passage of time and the natural environment. Wood plays a foundational role in the design, serving not merely as a structural or finishing medium, but as a primary vehicle for warmth, texture, and visual continuity. From the exterior elevations that engage with the surrounding landscape to the carefully composed interior spaces, the application of wood establishes a dialogue between the built form and nature. This material honesty is complemented by fluid spatial transitions, where interior rooms dissolve seamlessly into shaded patios, open terraces, and lush garden settings captured by Parente’s photography.

The layout of Casa Bahia prioritizes spatial fluidity and human scale. By prioritizing an open and breathable floor plan, Martinez ensures that every room benefits from natural ventilation and abundant daylight, fostering an indoor-outdoor lifestyle that is essential for a contemporary summer residence. The integration of expansive openings frames views of the verdant greenery and outdoor living areas, anchoring the architecture firmly within its local context. Every functional zone has been meticulously proportioned, avoiding unnecessary corridors or oversized rooms in favor of spaces that encourage gathering, relaxation, and contemplation.

This minimalist yet warm approach underscores Patricia Martinez Arquitetura’s broader commitment to design integrity. Known for creating interiors and structures that prioritize human well-being and emotional resonance, the firm has utilized Casa Bahia as a living laboratory for its core design tenets. The residence stands as a testament to Martinez’s ability to translate complex spatial theories into accessible, highly livable environments. By balancing strict geometric forms with soft, tactile finishes, the architect has crafted a home that feels both monumental in its clarity and intimate in its daily use.

As part of its broader presentation on the international architectural stage, Casa Bahia has drawn significant attention from critics and peers following its publication by leading platforms like ArchDaily.
