Every so often, in the quiet, unspooling hours of 3 AM, the mind tends to wander toward the metaphysical. Staring at the bedroom ceiling, one might find themselves contemplating the grander mysteries of human existence: the nature of free will, the purpose of our presence here, or perhaps something entirely more whimsical. For me, these late-night musings occasionally settle on a singular, rather unusual question: What if my family members and I were all different blends of tea?

While such a thought might seem like the byproduct of sleep deprivation, it is not, perhaps, as much of a stretch as it initially appears. Like the storied teas we have spent our lives sourcing, blending, and sharing with the world, the Harney family shares common roots. We possess our own unique profiles—sometimes straightforward, often complex, and almost always invigorated by a fair amount of caffeine. With the lights flipped on and the laptop open, it seems only fitting to explore this premise and see where this unusual, late-night odyssey leads.

If the Harney Family Were Tea…

Elyse Harney: The Matriarch’s Grace in Hao Ya ‘A’

To understand the character of the Harney family, one must begin with Elizabeth G. “Elyse” Harney. As our matriarch in the truest sense of the word, she is the bedrock upon which our collective identity is built. Elyse is spiritually grounded, possessing a quiet, formidable strength that commands respect without ever needing to demand it. She is a figure of immense composure and elegance, serving as a constant, warm presence in the lives of everyone around her. Remarkably, she maintains an openness to the shifts of modernity and progress that is as refreshing as it is rare.

If we were to map her personality onto a tea, it would have to be something warm to its core and resolute in character—a tea that has carried generations forward while remaining unmistakably relevant. That tea is undoubtedly our Hao Ya ‘A’. Hailing from the rolling, mist-covered hills of China’s Anhui province, Keemun teas have long been held in the highest regard, and Hao Ya represents one of the finest grades available. Our Hao Ya ‘A’ is an intense black tea that offers a sophisticated cocoa and apricot aroma, followed by deep, dark cocoa flavors. By incorporating a generous portion of high-quality tea tips, we achieve a natural sweetness and a smooth, refined texture that perfectly mirrors the grace and warmth of my grandmother.

Mike Harney: The Consistent Foundation of Organic Assam

My father, Mike Harney, serves as the engine of our family’s professional life. He is, by nature, energetic, optimistic, and perpetually forward-moving. While he is deeply traditional and conservative in the stewardship of our brand, he is also our family’s ultimate authority on the palate—a judgment honed through decades of rigorous tasting and experience. Though he is an exceptionally charismatic figure, he harbors no interest in the trappings of status or the vanity of pretense. He leads through presence, familiarity, and a consistency that anchors our entire organization.

If the Harney Family Were Tea…

If he were a tea, he would be one that does not need to shout to be heard. It is a brew that may not immediately call attention to itself, but once you have spent time with it, you find yourself trusting it completely. Our Organic Assam is his perfect “alter tea-go.” Given that Mike begins almost every day of his life with a cup or two of Assam, this is perhaps the most literal case of “you are what you drink.” Sourced from an estate on the northern side of India’s Brahmaputra River, this tea possesses the golden tips—and the resulting sweet, honeyed flavors—found in only the best Assams. It is medium-bodied with a substantial, reliable heft, offering a flavor profile defined by notes of bittersweet roasted malt. It is, like the man himself, dependable and profoundly grounded.

Brigitte Harney: The Refined Complexity of Mutan White

My mother, Brigitte (Guillot) Harney, brings a distinct European perspective to our family dynamic. Born in Suresnes, France, she carries an inherent elegance that defines her approach to both life and leadership. She is composed, refined, and stylish, possessing a rare ability to pair outward softness with an inner, unwavering strength. Within our family, she frequently acts as a moderator and a stabilizer, leading through a calm authority that is impossible to ignore. Yet, her outward reserve is merely a veil for the warmth she holds at her core.

Were Maman to be a tea, she would be Mutan White. This is a tea that reveals its true essence slowly; it becomes deeply warm and rewarding as you spend more time with it. Grown in China’s Fujian Province, specifically in the coastal city of Fuding—the historical birthplace of white tea commercialization—Mutan White is meticulously dried after harvesting. This production method allows for a subtle degree of oxidation, which gives this brew, the darkest of all white teas, its unique character. It features complex, fruity, and vegetal notes, reminiscent of steamed yellow squash or leeks. It is a tea of hidden depths, much like the woman who raised us.

Alex Harney: The Visionary Spirit of Wenshan Baozhong

Describing my brother, Alex, requires an understanding of the intersection between legacy and innovation. First and foremost, he is a vision-oriented creator. He is guided by his passions, often feeling the direction of a project first and refining the mechanics later. He is deeply invested in the emotional health and morale of our team, acting as a vital translator for our family across three generations. While he maintains a profound respect for the integrity of the Harney brand, he is equally comfortable living in the tension between established tradition and necessary change.

If Alex were a tea, he would be one that exists between worlds, translating tradition into a sensory experience that others can carry forward. Our Wenshan Baozhong is the ideal expression of his personality. It is a beautiful Taiwanese oolong crafted by the Cheng family, who have been mastering the art of the Baozhong for over a century. Tasting of honeyed flowers, this light-bodied tea offers a complex, fragrant aroma that hints at gardenia, jasmine, and rich butter. It is a tea that requires a sophisticated touch to appreciate, perfectly capturing Alex’s ability to bridge the gap between historical craft and modern appreciation.

Emeric Harney: The Evolving Narrative of Wuyi Da Hong Pao

And then there is myself, your humble human-to-tea transfigurator. I tend to think in terms of visuals and expression, though I strive to maintain a disciplined approach to my work. My professional life sits at the intersection of experience, brand development, and innovation, with a particular focus on the nuances of hospitality, atmosphere, and the underlying feeling of a space. I am naturally drawn to the power of storytelling and the importance of cultural context. While I may appear reserved on the surface, I like to think I have inherited a healthy dose of Harney charisma—perhaps best described as an introverted extrovert.

If the Harney Family Were Tea…

If I were to characterize myself as a tea, I would choose something expressive and intentional, meant to be lived with and appreciated over a long period. I identify most with our Wuyi Da Hong Pao. This is a medium-bodied oolong grown high in the Wuyi Mountains of China. Da Hong Pao, which translates to “big red robe,” is crafted from leaves that are roughly 40% oxidized, producing a flavor that is warm, rich, and remarkably evocative. With persistent notes of peach compote and dark molasses, each steep provides a slightly different evolution of flavor. I find that evolving over time is a process I can certainly relate to—and, come to think of it, I suspect I might look quite distinguished in a big red robe.

As the early morning light begins to break and my eyelids grow heavy, the muse of this strange, insomniac odyssey begins to fade. I hope this reflection has served as more than just a late-night curiosity. I hope it has offered you a deeper look into the individuals who make up the Harney family, a glimpse into the everyday luxury provided by our high-quality teas, and perhaps a small explanation as to why I will need an extra cup or two of caffeine to see me through the remainder of the day. Until next time, I hope you sleep well, and steep even better.
