Electronic pop mainstays Hot Chip have announced their upcoming studio album, A Long Way From Kansas, which is slated for release on January 8. Alongside the album announcement, the band has shared a new single titled "Random Violence," serving as a poignant tribute to the late Keith McIvor, better known as JD Twitch of the pioneering electronic duo Optimo. The track is accompanied by a music video directed by Jack Cole. The new album follows Hot Chip’s 2022 release, Freakout/Release. In the time between full-length projects, the band has remained active across various cultural and musical fronts. Earlier, they shared a 2025 reissue of their acclaimed greatest-hits collection, Joy In Repetition, made an appearance on the second season of the Netflix series Beef, and celebrated the milestone 20th anniversary of their sophomore studio album, The Warning. Last year in September, long-time friend and influential Glasgow DJ Keith McIvor passed away following a diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumour just a few months prior. Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard opened up about the profound influence McIvor had on the project in a statement accompanying the release. Goddard shared that McIvor largely inspired the words of the new song, remembering him as a passionate music lover and a staunch believer in socialism. Goddard explained that many of the lyrics relate directly to McIvor’s passing as well as fond memories of frequenting Sub Club in Glasgow, the legendary venue where Goddard and McIvor first met 20 years ago. A Long Way From Kansas also marks a notable internal shift for the band, featuring a first-time vocal turn from band member Felix Martin, who sings on a Hot Chip record for the very first time. In addition to Martin’s expanded vocal contributions, the album boasts notable guest appearances from acclaimed artists Beth Ditto and Eddie Chacon, adding diverse textures to the band’s signature electronic palette.
