In the picturesque southern zone of Porto Alegre, Brazil, architectural studio Oficina Conceito Arquitetura has completed Casa FG, a contemporary residence meticulously designed to serve as an urban sanctuary. Curated by Susanna Moreira and captured through the lens of architectural photographer Marcelo Donadussi, the project showcases how modern design can harmonize with a challenging topography while preserving a rare sense of close-knit community belonging within a major metropolitan area.

Originally occupied by a dwelling that carried the distinct atmosphere of a countryside estate, the plot offered a rare combination of qualities. While nestled securely in the urban fabric of Porto Alegre, the neighborhood retains the intimate, quiet character of a small town—an increasingly difficult amenity to find in contemporary city living. For the homeowners, this unique setting provided the ideal canvas to build a permanent residence that would balance spacious social amenities with serene private quarters.

The defining physical characteristic of the site is its dramatic 16-foot slope. Rather than viewing this topographical variation as an obstacle to be flattened or heavily engineered, Oficina Conceito Arquitetura embraced the elevation change as the foundational concept for the entire architectural layout. The slope became the primary tool used to organize the programmatic elements of the house, allowing the design team to manipulate perspectives, create distinct levels of privacy, and maximize visual connections to the surrounding landscape.

At the heart of the architectural strategy is the Guaíba River. By leveraging the property’s natural incline, the design positions the sweeping views of the river as the central focus of daily domestic life. Every major space within Casa FG has been carefully oriented to capture these expansive water vistas, integrating the natural environment directly into the spatial experience of the interior.

The resulting layout accommodates a comprehensive program tailored to modern family living. The residence features expansive social areas designed for gathering and entertaining, comfortable and secluded bedrooms, a contemporary swimming pool, a generous terrace, and a dedicated pool house. Each of these functional zones is articulated through clean lines, thoughtful material selections, and a seamless indoor-outdoor connection that encourages residents to engage directly with the terrain and the surrounding views.

The integration of the swimming pool and terrace areas highlights the project’s emphasis on leisure and landscape interaction. Situated to take advantage of the site’s orientation, these outdoor amenities flow naturally from the main indoor living spaces, creating a cohesive environment for relaxation and social engagement. The pool house further enhances this lifestyle offering, providing an independent yet connected pavilion that complements the main residential structure.

Throughout the design process, Oficina Conceito Arquitetura balanced the scale of the residence with the intimate pedestrian scale of the neighborhood. Despite its generous footprint and modern amenities, Casa FG respects its urban context, establishing a quiet dialogue with the streetscape while turning its primary architectural energy inward and toward the water. The careful handling of thresholds, transitions, and sightlines ensures that the inhabitants enjoy both privacy from the immediate surroundings and an unhindered connection to the broader geography of Porto Alegre.

The completion of Casa FG adds a notable residential project to the architectural landscape of southern Brazil, demonstrating how topographically challenging urban plots can be transformed into sophisticated sanctuaries through thoughtful spatial planning and a sensitive approach to site context.
