Alec Ounsworth is returning with a new project under the banner of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, drawing from a deeply personal period of grief, transition, and renewal. Titled Burned, the upcoming 10-track record marks the first full-length offering from the indie rock project in five years. The album is set for independent release on January 29 through Ounsworth’s own CYHSY label, following a production process overseen by longtime collaborator Nick Krill. Alongside the album announcement, Ounsworth has released the record’s lead single, “Fever of the Mind,” offering listeners a first glimpse into the sonic and thematic direction of the project. To support the release, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah has mapped out an extensive itinerary of tour dates stretching across both North America and Europe, keeping the project on the road well into the spring. The songwriter navigated the emotional fallout of a significant romantic breakup alongside the recent deaths of several individuals close to him. Rather than retreating entirely from his craft, Ounsworth channeled these complex layers of loss, heartache, and resilience into the studio, resulting in a body of work that addresses these heavy themes head-on. Over the course of the ten tracks, the record explores the turbulent aftermath of personal disruption while retaining the distinctive artistic identity that has defined the project for over two decades. Central to the shaping of the album was its lead offering. According to Ounsworth, “Fever of the Mind” served as an indispensable anchor for the entire creative process, dictating the musical boundaries and emotional tone that the rest of the record would eventually follow. “This was the song that sort of thematically and sonically guided the rest of the album,” Ounsworth said of the single. “Maybe the most important thing for me is to establish that first and then shape the other songs around it.” The release of Burned arrives closely on the heels of a milestone period for the project. In 2025, Ounsworth completed a dedicated anniversary tour celebrating two decades since the release of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s landmark 2005 self-titled debut. That record, which captured the imagination of indie rock fans and critics alike during the mid-2000s blog-rock boom, established Ounsworth as a singular voice characterized by his idiosyncratic vocal delivery and literate, melancholic songwriting. The anniversary tour allowed both longtime supporters and newer listeners to revisit the material that initially propelled the project into the global indie consciousness, laying a reflective foundation for the forward-looking mindset required to complete Burned. With the album now officially announced and its primary single streaming, fans are preparing for a robust run of live performances. The upcoming touring schedule begins in early February, taking the band across Europe and the United Kingdom before returning to North America for a comprehensive stretch of dates spanning April and May. The international leg of the tour kicks off on February 6 in Istanbul, Turkey, with a performance at Zorlu. From there, the band will travel through continental Europe and the UK, stopping in Zurich, Switzerland at Bogen F on February 9, and Lille, France at L’Aéronef on February 11. As May begins, the tour shifts toward the Midwest and the Great Lakes region. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah will perform at the Turf Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 7, followed by a high-profile Midwest date at Thalia Hall in Chicago, Illinois on May 8. The band will then visit the Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 9, before crossing the border for a performance at The Great Hall in Toronto, Ontario on May 11. The final stretch of the tour brings the project back to the northeastern United States. The band will play the Center for the Arts of Homer in Homer, New York on May 12, followed by a performance at Racket in New York, New York on May 13. The itinerary wraps up with shows at The Sinclair in Cambridge, Massachusetts on May 14 and Underground Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 15.
