In 2014, Charli xcx’s megahit “Boom Clap” had an undeniable stranglehold on the airwaves, soundtracking everything from blockbuster teen romances to radio countdowns across the globe. Now, over a decade later in 2026, the track has achieved an entirely different kind of cultural milestone: premiering firmly in meme status. Pop culture enthusiasts across social media platforms have spent weeks sharing a now-iconic, nostalgic video showcasing a very specific, theatrical call and response. “You are the light and I will follow,” croons Charli in her signature, unmistakable warble, leaning heavily into the dramatic delivery. This unforgettable moment originally took place back in 2015 during Swift’s massive 1989 World Tour, a cultural artifact from an era when Charli xcx served as the tour’s primary opening act. That viral piece of pop history was almost certainly front and center in Chappell Roan’s mind when she made a surprise appearance as a guest performer on Charli’s ongoing Music, Fashion, Film Tour. When taking the stage alongside the British pop visionary, Roan leaned entirely into the bit, playfully refusing to sing any other track besides the iconic “Boom Clap.” While Charli and Roan were busy engineering a fresh 2026 update to the decade-old meme—footage that was subsequently shared and re-shared countless times across TikTok, X, and Instagram—fashion observers couldn’t help but notice that Roan had also undergone a striking style evolution. Nodding directly to the gritty, unapologetic rocker aesthetic that defines Charli’s latest musical era, Roan stepped onto the stage wearing a custom-made, slashed-up black leather top. The garment was heavily accented with metal grommets and roughly hemmed together with thick laces, creating a silhouette that felt both dangerous and structurally intricate. It was quickly revealed that Roan and her stylist, Hunter Clem, had tapped rising London-based designer Eden Sherry for the striking stage look. Remarkably, the entire custom piece was turned around and constructed in a single day. Sherry’s rapid ascent in the fashion world is the kind of modern fairytale rooted in digital obsession and relentless craft. After graduating from the prestigious London College of Fashion in 2024, Sherry currently lives and works in London, though her worldview was shaped by a truly international upbringing: she was born in New Zealand and raised in Hong Kong. Growing up as a child utterly obsessed with the intricate world of music videos, she recalls watching Lady Gaga’s cinematic “Bad Romance” on a continuous loop on YouTube. Witnessing the boundary-pushing pop icon perform live in 2011 introduced a young Sherry to what she describes as a “whole new world of fashion.” It feels entirely fortuitous, then, that Sherry is now outfitting the biggest pop stars on massive stages at the absolute height of their cultural dominance. Following the viral success of the tour appearance, we caught up with the designer to discuss the whirlwind journey of crafting custom pieces for Chappell Roan, her design philosophy, and what it means to see her clothes come alive under the stage lights. Hey Eden – can you tell us the story of how you came to make this custom look for Chappell Roan? Eden Sherry: Chappell’s stylist Hunter Clem reached out a couple of weeks ago to request some pieces, and we had just finished our new Folded Belt Set in our studio. They thought it would work perfectly for Chappell’s performance with Charli. It was perfect timing, and I am very grateful for their support! What was the inspiration for the look? Eden Sherry: I am obsessed with capturing moments of energy, frozen in time. I wanted the top to stand as a silhouette of “toppling belts”, falling down over the body and then tied with lacing in sections to create a moving structure that is still but fluid. The bikini bottoms are part of our main summer line and are perfect for a day rave. How long did it take to make? Eden Sherry: We designed and tested it over a couple of days, and it came together in one day. Our emphasis on eyelets and lacing takes a lot of time! I have the best assistant, Eugene Escurin Lopez, and we make everything together in our studio. What does it mean to you to work with Chappell? Eden Sherry: She’s built a world full of self-expression and individuality, something I strongly believe in. She is a massive role model for authentic self-expression and not taking yourself so seriously, but standing for what you believe in. What drew you to designing with leather? Eden Sherry: I became obsessed with its versatility, with endless ways to manipulate and distress it into fun pieces. We work exclusively with deadstock leather sourced around London, with small patina differences that add their own unique character to each piece we make. Who are the fashion designers that inspire you? Eden Sherry: I am constantly inspired by my best friend Leo Prothmann, who has endlessly helped with the growth of my brand, and what he is doing in uplifting important voices that don’t always get a platform. I will forever be a McQueen girlie too. When did you first start your brand? And who is your customer or muse? Eden Sherry: I carried on my work from graduation, making clothes for artists on a commission basis, and then, after winning an award in Portugal, I officially launched in 2025. I don’t really have a muse, but I do make clothes for anyone who knows how to have fun. Everything is designed to be durable for heavy nights and come alive when people move and dance in them. What would you say is your biggest professional achievement to date? Eden Sherry: Waking up last year to FKA twigs wearing my bag top on the cover of Rolling Stone was pretty surreal. Who’s someone you’ve never dressed that you’d love to see wearing your designs? Eden Sherry: I would love to dress Caroline Polachek and, of course, Charli xcx. Maybe together? And lastly, what’s the ultimate goal for your brand? Eden Sherry: We want to continue working within nightlife, and are excitingly planning our first live presentation next summer. We are really enjoying working on a bunch of customs at the moment and hope to continue growing in Europe and beyond.
