Architecture has long served as a physical manifestation of memory, heritage, and personal identity. Nowhere is this more apparent than in residential design, where a dwelling must often reconcile where clients came from with where they currently live. Designed by architecture practice tubb, the newly completed Sukoon House stands as a thoughtful exploration of this exact dichotomy. Situated on the transitional threshold where the bustling urban edge of Mohali meets the serene, pastoral village of Chunni Kalan, the residence offers a masterclass in spatial storytelling, deeply rooted in the cultural ethos and rural values of its inhabitants.

Occupying a thoughtfully proportioned 30-foot by 75-foot site, Sukoon House enjoys a prime, park-facing orientation that immediately connects the built environment with open green vistas. Commissioned by a couple who spent their formative years in a traditional village setting, the home was conceptualized to honor their enduring ties to rural life while seamlessly accommodating the practical demands and aesthetic sensibilities of contemporary urban living. Rather than imposing a generic, hyper-modern box onto the site, the design team at tubb embarked on a sensitive journey to bridge traditional Punjabi ways of living with modern spatial organization, creating a sanctuary of peace—fittingly named "Sukoon," which translates to tranquility or inner calm.

The architectural narrative of Sukoon House begins with its exterior profile, captured through the lens of architectural photographers Suryan Saurabh. The facade and structural elements make deliberate use of earthy materials, prominently featuring exposed brickwork and warm timber accents. These choices are far from arbitrary; they evoke the tactile, grounded quality of rural architecture, where materials are left in their natural, unadorned states to weather gracefully over time. The solid yet inviting massing of the home establishes a protective boundary against the rapid urbanization surrounding the area, while the park-facing orientation ensures that the interior spaces remain visually and physically tethered to nature.

Inside, the home unfolds as a sequence of carefully curated spaces that balance openness with intimacy. In traditional Punjabi households, social interaction, hospitality, and communal living form the bedrock of daily life. The architects at tubb translated this cultural requirement into an open-plan layout where living, dining, and transitional zones flow into one another effortlessly. This spatial continuity prevents the home from feeling compartmentalized, encouraging familial gathering much like the open courtyards and common rooms found in rural dwellings. At the same time, private quarters are thoughtfully tucked away, offering retreats for quiet contemplation and rest.

Materiality plays a pivotal role in shaping the emotional resonance of the interiors. Warm timber floors, artisanal brick walls, and carefully detailed joinery work together to create an atmosphere of warmth and authenticity. The play of natural light across these textured surfaces transforms the interiors throughout the day, casting dynamic shadows and highlighting the craftsmanship involved in the construction process. Every design decision—from the positioning of fenestrations to capture prevailing breezes and park views to the selection of tactile finishes—serves to reinforce the overarching theme of grounded tranquility.

The completion of Sukoon House marks a significant contribution to the residential landscape of Mohali. By refusing to treat urban and rural lifestyles as mutually exclusive, tubb has demonstrated how contemporary architecture can pay homage to heritage without compromising on modern comfort. The residence stands not only as a deeply personal home for its owners but also as an inspiring architectural precedent for how growing cities can respectfully incorporate the memories and values of those who transition from village life to the urban fabric. Through its meticulous attention to material, context, and spatial flow, Sukoon House successfully captures the essence of its name, providing a timeless haven of peace on the edge of the city.
