Yuelang Road, nestled within the core financial and commercial hub of Qianjiang Century City in Hangzhou, China, has undergone a comprehensive quality enhancement project designed by TJAD Original Design Studio. Surrounded by six high-density commercial and office towers, this approximately 330-meter internal street previously served a purely utilitarian function, accommodating office commuters, garage access, temporary parking, and building logistics. Prior to its recent renewal, the narrow corridor was characterized by intense spatial competition, where motor vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, and loading operations vied for dominance within severely restricted spatial boundaries. The building frontages along both sides were heavily fragmented by physical barriers, including fences, disjointed planting beds, level changes, and mismatched paving materials, ultimately reducing the street to a congested commercial-office backstreet dominated by relentless motion rather than human habitation or rest.

Recognizing the urgent need to humanize this high-density urban environment, the architects devised a cohesive renewal framework that seamlessly integrates the roadway, pedestrian pathways, and building frontages into a unified system. Rather than treating traffic management and public space as conflicting priorities, the intervention reimagines the street section to balance efficiency with liveability. A cornerstone of the design strategy involved relocating surface parking to optimize spatial distribution, thereby clearing the way for a more rationalized right-of-way that accommodates all modes of transit without overwhelming the pedestrian experience.

By reorganizing the street section and systematically opening up the building frontages, the design team broke down the physical and visual barriers that once cut the street off from its surrounding towers. The introduction of dedicated seating, outdoor dining zones, and flexible public activity spaces has transformed Yuelang Road from a monotonous logistics corridor into a dynamic, continuous pedestrian and public-space network. Workers from the surrounding high-rise offices can now step outside into an environment that actively encourages pausing, socializing, and dining al fresco, breathing new life into what was once a sterile urban backstreet.

In addition to addressing spatial fragmentation and circulation, the design heavily emphasizes the sensory and atmospheric qualities of the urban landscape, particularly after dark. Drawing inspiration from Yuelang Road’s pre-existing metropolitan nightscape, the architects introduced a cohesive thematic concept rooted in the phases of the moon. This lunar motif is subtly integrated across various architectural elements, custom lighting installations, and bespoke street furniture, creating a distinct visual identity for the block. The thoughtful lighting design not only enhances pedestrian safety during evening hours but also establishes a welcoming ambiance that supports nighttime economic activity and social interaction.

Through this meticulous quality enhancement, TJAD Original Design Studio has successfully demonstrated how overlooked internal corridors in high-density business districts can be repurposed to serve the public good. By harmonizing everyday vehicular and pedestrian circulation with vibrant communal spaces, the Yuelang Road block project sets a new benchmark for urban micro-renewal in Hangzhou and beyond, proving that even the most pragmatic backstreets hold the potential to become thriving centers of urban life.
